About the Emmaus House Summer Camps

Camp Mikell
Day Camp - each summer, Emmaus House hosts a free 7 week day camp for 125 – 150 elementary students and ends with a four night visit to Camp Mikell in the North Georgia mountains.  We also offer an arts based camp for a small group of middle schoolers.  Registration occurs in early May for both programs.

Details:

Emmaus House hosts a summer day camp at D.H. Stanton Elementary school for 150 neighborhood children in kindergarten through fifth grade.  Our goal is to provide memorable camp experiences that are safe, help to reduce summer learning loss, connect kids to nature, expose kids to cultural institutions, offer physical activities, and include healthy nutritious food.  Since our earliest days, Emmaus House has been providing safe and enriching summer experiences at no cost to children in Peoplestown who otherwise would be left at home unsupervised.  Children comprise a third of the neighborhood and the majority of those under six live below the poverty line in single parent households.  Fulton County’s Division of Family and Children Services also reports that our zip code has the highest rates of child neglect in the county.  The camp operates June to July and concludes with a three night stay at Camp Mikell.  For most of our campers this is their only opportunity to travel outside of the city.

Photos from Common Ground, "Common Soles" for the Vets

The Good News from the Deacons is that over $9000 was raised for the work of the Ministries of Common Ground. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be showcasing the work they do on this blog.

To begin, Common Ground held a special "Common Soles" for any one has served in the military held at the Gateway Center on Pryor Street in Downtown Atlanta.

Then [Jesus] poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. … And he said to them, "You also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example …"
—John 13: 5, 12, 14-15

The "Common Soles" Clinic is held each Monday afternoon from 2:30-4:30PM. During the winter it is usually held at the Gateway Center. March through November it is held in a parking lot near Trinity Ave. and Peachtree Street.
